Claude Code vs Cursor: A Practitioner's Comparison

Beyond feature matrices. How Claude Code and Cursor actually differ in professional workflows, customization, and daily use.

I use both. Every day. Over twelve hours.

Claude Code for my personal projects. Cursor at work, in a professional software company — a SaaS — where we have hundreds of engineers. I don't do vibe coding. I write professional software, with specs, tests, and production deploys. And I've been doing this for over a year.

I say this because most comparisons I've read are written by people who tried one tool for a weekend. Or worse: people who tried neither and just summarized what others said. Feature tables, prices copied from the website, and a "depends on your needs" conclusion.

I'll try to make this article different. It's the comparison I wish I'd had when I started: real opinions, declared biases, and what no other article covers — how you configure them, customize them, and fit them into a real professional workflow.

The fundamental split: agent vs IDE

The difference between Claude Code and Cursor isn't a feature list. It's a philosophy of work.

Claude Code is an agent that lives in your terminal. You describe what you want, it drives, you review. There's no graphical interface between you and the model. It's text, stdin/stdout, a process you can compose with pipes, scripts, and other terminal tools.

Cursor is an IDE with integrated AI. It's a fork of VS Code with artificial intelligence injected into every corner: autocomplete, inline editing, visual diffs, conversational agent. You drive, the AI assists.

This matters more than it seems. If your workflow is terminal-first — Zed, Neovim, tmux — Claude Code fits like a glove. If you want everything in one place — files, git, terminal, agent — Cursor is, without exaggeration, the best integrated experience available right now. An engineering feat where everything feels cohesive and fast despite running on Electron.

I don't know anything in the GUI space that comes close.

A detail few mention: Claude Code's VS Code extension works inside Cursor. You can use both simultaneously in the same editor.

Models and context

Here's one of the most tangible differences.

Claude Code uses Claude models exclusively. You can't choose GPT, Gemini, or anything external. Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 offer 1 million tokens of context — enough to reason about an entire mid-sized codebase in a single session.

Cursor is multi-model. You can choose between Claude, GPT-5.4, Gemini 3.1, Grok, and even the Composer family (1, 1.5, and 2), their proprietary models. Special mention for Composer 1: it's one of the fastest things I've ever seen. Almost at the speed of thought. Spectacular for lightweight tasks where latency matters more than reasoning depth. Each model has its own per-token pricing and context window. "Max Mode" extends context to the model's maximum, with a 20% surcharge.

Cursor's flexibility sounds good on paper. In practice, Claude remains the de facto standard for coding — at least right now. Most Cursor users end up using Claude Sonnet or Claude Opus as their primary model. More options don't always mean better results.

Pricing: the real math

Every comparison includes pricing tables. Here are mine, verified as of March 2026:

The official numbers are there. Now, the real experience.

I use the Max plan for Claude Code. The pricing is transparent: I know what I pay, I know what I get. With my CRAFT methodology — based on Spec Driven Development — I rarely exhaust the quota. I used to hit the limit on Pro sometimes. Not on Max.

Cursor is paid for by my company. And this is where it gets complicated. The pricing is not transparent. The usage multipliers (3x, 20x) apply to a base that isn't published. "Requests" aren't a fixed number. And worst of all: pricing changes in ways that sometimes feel arbitrary. It's happened before and it's happening now. I've witnessed internal discussions firsthand at a company with hundreds of engineers over this exact issue.

Cursor can afford to do this because the product is excellent. But that lack of transparency is something that doesn't happen with Anthropic.

For a solo developer, the pragmatic calculation: $20 Cursor Pro + $20 Claude Code Pro = $40/month for both ecosystems. That's my recommendation for anyone starting out.

The customization gap (what no one covers)

This is where most comparisons stop. And where it gets interesting.

Months ago, Claude Code had a clear advantage in customization: CLAUDE.md, hooks, skills, and subagents had no real equivalent in Cursor. Today, that advantage has narrowed significantly.

An agent is an agent, a skill is a skill, a hook is a hook. In both Claude Code and Cursor. The concepts are cross-cutting. And the reason has a name: Anthropic set the standard.

MCP was created by Anthropic. The plugin marketplace concept was launched by Anthropic first. The specification of what an agent, a skill, or a hook is — Anthropic brought order when every tool defined these concepts slightly differently. The rest adopted.

This pattern repeats systematically: Anthropic innovates, the ecosystem inherits. For me, it's one more signal that reinforces the decision to stay close to the source.

MCP: same protocol, different experience

Both tools support MCP (Model Context Protocol). The configuration is virtually identical: a JSON with the server, commands, and parameters.

The difference is in the ecosystem around it. Cursor launched a marketplace in March 2026 with over 30 plugins from Atlassian, Datadog, GitLab, and others. Claude Code has its own marketplace. In practice, MCP servers are compatible across both tools because the specification — once again, defined by Anthropic — is the same.

If you already have MCP servers configured for one tool, porting them to the other is trivial. The JSON configuration is virtually identical.

Autonomous work: subagents, cloud agents, and background agents

Both tools have converged toward similar models here, but with important nuances.

Claude Code:

  • Subagents with their own tools, permissions, and context
  • Worktree isolation: each subagent works on an isolated copy of the repository via git worktree
  • Agent teams (experimental): multiple Claude Code instances coordinating, with a team lead assigning tasks
  • Background agents: long-running tasks on the Desktop app and web (claude.ai/code)

Cursor:

  • Cloud agents: remote execution on Cursor infrastructure, can build and test end-to-end
  • Self-hosted cloud agents (March 2026): execution on your own infrastructure
  • Automations (March 2026): always-on agents triggered by Slack, Linear, GitHub, PagerDuty
  • Subagents within agent sessions

Cursor has native enterprise integrations: triggers from Slack, Linear, PagerDuty. Claude Code also has Slack integration (deployed December 2025), and in March 2026 launched Channels — an MCP-based system that connects Claude Code sessions with Telegram, Discord, and iMessage, with Slack and WhatsApp as the most requested community extensions. Where Claude Code stands out is in granularity of control: worktree isolation, per-subagent permissions, and the composability of a CLI you can orchestrate from any script.

The race for remote control

After the rise of OpenClaw, both Anthropic and Cursor are accelerating remote management capabilities. Anthropic has moved aggressively: scheduled tasks via /loop and Cowork, voice activation in 20 languages, Dispatch for launching tasks from mobile, and the aforementioned Channels for interacting with Claude from messaging platforms. Cursor has responded with cloud agents, self-hosted agents, and automations.

It's one more reason to pay close attention — especially in the case of Anthropic, which has historically been the one defining these categories before others adopt them.

Code quality and efficiency

An independent benchmark by Ian Nuttall — which surpassed 200,000 views on X — found that Claude Code uses 5.5x fewer tokens than Cursor for identical tasks: 33,000 tokens with zero errors versus 188,000 tokens with several intermediate errors, for the same multi-file implementation. Other studies point to slightly higher first-try correctness: 78% vs 73%, with the gap widening on more complex tasks (68% vs 54% for complete feature implementations).

These numbers are real. But they matter less than they seem.

Output quality depends far more on how you structure your prompt, your spec, your context, than on the tool itself. A well-written spec with a configured CLAUDE.md produces excellent results in both tools. A vague prompt produces garbage in both.

Where I do notice the difference is in token efficiency. Claude Code, being more direct (no UI layer, no intermediate indexing), consumes less. This translates to longer sessions before hitting quota and lower cost per task if you use the API.

SDD: Spec Driven Development and how each tool adapts

This is something I've barely seen covered in other comparisons. And it's probably what matters most for professional use.

Quick prompting — "build me a landing page" — ran out of steam months ago. On social media it works because they want spectacle, speed, fireworks. In the professional industry we work the exact opposite way: we seek control and predictability. Since an LLM is probabilistic, we seek the highest possible determinism.

That's why frameworks like OpenSpec exist, and methodologies like CRAFT, where everything is based on having something traceable, recorded, and shared. Even if you work alone.

A professional project without some form of Spec Driven Development is, today, madness.

The good news: since tool orchestration is practically identical between Claude Code and Cursor, any methodology works almost 100% the same way in both. Specs are markdown files. Plans are text. Scripts are bash. Everything is portable.

The difference, once again, is ergonomics. These workflows are text files, and working with text files feels more natural in a terminal. Cursor adds a UI layer that's powerful, but it's an extra layer. For those of us who live in the terminal, that layer is friction. For those who prefer a GUI, it's value.

There's no right answer here. It's personal preference, and I deeply respect both.

The hybrid workflow

If you can afford it, use both. I'm not joking.

Claude Code for the heavy lifting: multi-file refactoring, long-running autonomous tasks, codebase research, complex spec-driven implementations. This is where its agent model and context window shine.

Cursor for daily editing: autocomplete, visual diffs, conflict resolution, code navigation. This is where its IDE integration is unmatched.

The setup is trivial. Open Cursor. Open a terminal inside Cursor. Run claude. Now you have Claude Code inside Cursor. Let Claude make the changes, review them in Cursor's visual diffs. Best of both worlds.

For teams, the calculus changes. Cursor Teams at $40/user includes centralized billing, SSO, and analytics. Claude Code doesn't have a comparable Teams tier at the same price point. For a company, Cursor is likely the base IDE with Claude Code used via API for specific tasks or as an individual tool for senior engineers who prefer the terminal.

Closing

You can't go wrong with either one. I say this after over a year of using both professionally, over six hours a day, often twelve. Sometimes I genuinely struggle to choose.

If I had to give one piece of advice: try both for at least a month and decide. Don't listen to completely polarized opinions. Be wary of anyone who tells you one is garbage and the other is perfect. That person probably hasn't used either on a real project.

And one last point I don't see in any other article: it's impossible to master something that changes every day. The tool you describe today will be different tomorrow. The model changes, the features change, the ecosystem changes. Make your peace with that. The feeling of always learning isn't a bug — it's the reality of the field. And curiously, it's something tremendously beneficial. It keeps you humble, proactive, and honest.

My biggest mistake was looking too much outward at the beginning. YouTube, LinkedIn, the "experts" with their courses to "master" the tool. Most of it is noise. If you want to learn for real, go to the official documentation. Claude Code's is spectacular. Cursor's is too. Keep them open while you work. Every time you don't know something, search, read, come back. It's more than enough.

Don't overcomplicate it.
