TL;DR If you see
Usage limit reached · wrapping up, don't press Esc: Claude is spending a small slice of your weekly limit to finish the step it was in the middle of. On Pro you get it once a week. On Max and Team Premium seats, every time you hit the 5-hour limit.
The wrap-up allowance is the margin Claude Code uses when you hit the 5-hour limit partway through a response. It used to stop right there, sometimes with an edit half applied. Since v2.1.277 it finishes the step it was on, then stops, and tells you so with Usage limit reached · wrapping up.
What you see
There are three notices, depending on what happens:
Usage limit reached · wrapping up
Usage limit reached
Usage limit reached · brief included wrap-up, then usage credits
The first shows while Claude finishes. The second when it stops with no allowance: you already used it this week, your plan doesn't include it, or it ran out. The third when you have usage credits turned on: it spends the included allowance first, then keeps going on credits at standard rates.
(The strings come from the v2.1.293 binary. I didn't force a limit to capture them on screen.)
How often you get it
| Plan | Wrap-up allowance |
|---|---|
| Pro | Once per weekly usage period, whether or not you use all of it |
| Max | Every time you hit the 5-hour limit |
| Team, Premium seat | Every time you hit the 5-hour limit |
It isn't free. What it uses comes out of your weekly limit like any other usage, and it doesn't raise that limit. It's a small amount that varies by plan, so it may not be enough to finish the task.
When you don't get it
- A new message after the limit. The allowance only covers the response already in progress. Anything you send afterwards waits for the reset, as before.
- API keys, Bedrock or Vertex, and chats in the Claude app. It only applies to Claude Code signed in with your Claude account.
- If you interrupt it. Esc cuts the wrap-up short like any other response.
You can't request it, save it or carry it over to another week either. It applies on its own when you're eligible, and Anthropic is rolling it out gradually: even on the right version, you may not have it yet.
And when the limit resets
The wrap-up closes out the response in progress, but it doesn't pick the task back up. That's the other half: making Claude Code continue on its own when the limit resets. With both on, hitting the limit leaves you neither a half-finished edit nor a stalled session.
When each limit resets, and why the weekly one is the cap that can lock you out for days, is in the 5-hour window and the weekly cap. The same week the wrap-up shipped, Anthropic raised 5-hour limits by 20% and gave Pro, Max and Team one full reset to use once: if you haven't spent it, it's in Settings > Usage until October 22, 2026.
